Mid-Band DSL

Faster Broadband, less outages and lower cost

Discovery Broadband powered by NEC NEXTEP releases two new technologies enabling faster synchronous service speeds (Mid-Band DSL)

Discover the business benefits

  • Flexibility - Various grades of service on offer to optimise application performance
  • Scalability - Easily scales up to 20Mbps* as the business needs grow
  • Compatibility - Service is delivered via a standard Ethernet interface
  • Cost savings - Fibre like performance and bandwidth at a reduced cost
  • Improved reliability - Multiple copper lines, so if one goes down, the others - and you - stay up and running.

Discover the features

  • Speed promise - You receive a guaranteed speed from your local exchange
  • Symmetrical speeds - EFM lines provide the same speed for both upload and download via a symmetrical line from your exchange
  • Perfect for VoIP - With guaranteed speeds and excellent reliability EFM is a perfect partner for VoIP
  • No phone line needed - Unlike ADSL, EFM provides a direct Ethernet socket from your local exchange, freeing your phone line

The two new technologies in the new services released are:

Extended SHDSL (EFM) - utilising a higher compression technology to deliver faster speeds over two copper pairs, and
Ethernet Over Copper (EOC) - utilising more copper pairs to deliver the higher speed.

The result is achievable synchronous bandwidth (the same speed for uploads and downloads) at higher speeds up to 20Mb/20Mb at a lower cost than fibre.

The Broadband coverage is quite extensive, however please note that service is subject to availability as the local exchange, the quality of copper in the street as well as your distance from the exchange all play a role in availability.

The good news is that the service is more reliable - traditionally, DSL services are susceptible to a single pair failure causing a total outage (both for 2-wire and 4-wire services).

These new services have built-in redundancy so that if a single pair fails, the worst you will experience is a degradation in speed as opposed to a complete outage making the Broadband service much more reliable as a result.

Broadband Speeds available relative to distance from local Mid-Band DSL-enabled Exchange

* Actual speeds achieved will be dependent on a variety of factors such as distance from exchange, availability and quality of copper pairs, electrical interference, customer cabling. Also RIM or pair gain may limit connection speed.
